Kristallnacht | The Night of Broken Glass

KRISTALLNACHT
The Night of Broken Glass
9 NOVEMBER 1938
"First set fire to their synagogues or schools and bury and cover with dirt whatever will not burn, so that no man will ever again see a stone or cinder of them. This is to be done in honor of our Lord and of Christendom, so that God might see that we are Christians..."
Martin Luther (1543)
An unimaginable, massive attack on the Jewish People, their synagogues, and Jewish businesses was coordinated throughout the German Reich on the night of November 9, 1938, and continued over the next few days.

Known as Kristallnacht, or The Night of Broken Glass, the excuse for terror against the entirety of the German Jewish population was a reprisal for the shooting of a member of the German Embassy staff in Paris by a 17 year old Jewish youth. Herschel Grynszpan, shot and killed the German staffer for the poor treatment his father and family suffered at the hands of the Nazi regime in Germany.

More than 900 synagogues were burned, approximately 100 Jews were murdered, 7,000 businesses destroyed, and 30,000 Jewish men were sent to concentration camps by the time the Nazi Storm Troopers ended their siege.
A U.S official in Leipzig described what he saw of the atrocities: "The insatiably sadistic perpetrators threw many of the trembling inmates into a small stream that flows through the zoological park, commanding horrified spectators to spit at them, defile them with mud and jeer at their plight."
The Holocaust, the Shoah, had officially begun.

The following day Goebbels announced, "We shed not a tear for them [the Jews.]"

Regarding the destruction of synagogues, he said, "They stood in the way long enough. We can use the space made free more usefully than as Jewish fortresses."

Within one week of "Kristallnacht" the Nazi government began to totally remove the Jewish People from ever sector of German public life

Immediately, the Nazis circulated a letter declaring that Jewish businesses could not be reopened unless they were to be managed by non-Jews.

Jewish children were barred from attending school by November 15th.

Then the Nazis issued the "Decree on Eliminating the Jews from German Economic Life," prohibiting Jews from selling goods or providing services anywhere, from engaging in crafts work, from serving as the managers of any firms, and from being members of cooperatives.

Most sadistic and grievous, the Nazis determined that the Jews should be liable for the damages caused during "Kristallnacht."

"...they are the bearers of God’s word. And deep down in our hearts we hate them for it. For we hate God and do not want to follow His Law."
Pierre van Paassen, Zionist and uniquely insightful European war correspondent recalls the words of a visiting Huguenot minister to his family home in Holland following a prayer meeting for the return of the People of Israel to their Holy Land. Caspar Daubenton’s words carried the clear-sighted edge of the prophetic to fifteen year old Pierre in 1910, who would witness their unfolding in the decades to come.
There is,” he said, “a mystery about the people of the Jews, a mystery which both attracts and repels us. Sometimes I think,” he went on, “that the mystery resides in the fact that they, unconsciously perhaps, as a people, are the bearers of God’s word. We know they are... We feel they are. And deep down in our hearts we hate them for it. For we hate God and do not want to follow His Law. In their mere presence there lies always, I find, a subtle, often unavowed and undefinable challenge to us, something of a reproof, an accusation. They remind us of something of which we do not like to be reminded.
I think,” he said, “that there sits the core of the secret of Jewish persecution in Christian lands.”
And then he went on to speak about the dread possibility of that mentally reserved hatred awaking some day in Europe. “Some incident, insignificant in itself,” I remember him saying “may very well bring it into the open. Not long ago we saw it come snarling to the surface with Dreyfus affair in a country as civilized as France. Who knows when and where it will break out again? And so long as that hatred persists in our hearts,” he said gravely, “the Jews are not safe anywhere, not in Russia, not in Germany, not in Holland, or in that far-off America to which so many of them are fleeing these days from Russia.”

Clashes Erupt in Berlin Amid Kristallnacht Events
NEWS 09 November 2014 21:27
Clashes and arrests marred the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, as several hundred left-wing activists met far-rights in the city center. The latter were rallying in commemoration of the 1938 Kristallnacht Nazi attacks against Jews.

On Sunday, left-wing activists held a non-sanctioned demonstration near the capital’s Alexanderplatz train station against the fall of the Berlin Wall, while most Berliners were commemorating the 25th anniversary of the event. RTNews
WHOM DO YOU SERVE?

How deeply tragic that such a legacy of hatred has been wrought through the ages by those claiming the Name of the Author of Love. Lies, malice, hatred, destruction, and murder ... these are the unmistakeable fingerprints of the enemy of life--not only the Jewish People. He is the enemy even of those who serve him. Their end will be destruction, for he can only provide death and destruction.

Why have the Jewish People been the target throughout time? They stand as a bastion against his lies. Even in unbelief, their existence PROVES the promises of the Bible and the existence of the Almighty!

Why do so-called Christians turn against the Jewish People? God alone knows. For they ARE HOLY, set apart, for His Divine purposes! This is HIS sovereign choice! Do we respect His sovereignty? Is He not our King?

Perhaps there is a bit of what Pierre van Paassen said in the dynamic as well ...
we don't like to be reminded of His Law ...
Paul made it clear: "God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew." (Romans 11:2)
If God has not rejected His people, Israel, then who is one serving when they defy the Master of the Universe and reject them?
Pray for the peace (wholeness, well-being) of Jerusalem! (Psalm 122:6)

Why I support Israel

Tisha B’Av and Between the Straits
“...mourn with those who mourn.”
Romans 12:15 NIV

“Should I weep in the fifth month (in Hebrew, "Av"),
separating myself, as I have done these so many years?”

Between the Straits

The three week period between the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av have historically been days of great hardship and catastrophe for the Jewish people. This time is called “Between the Straits,” from Lamentations 1:3:
“Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction,

and because of great servitude:
she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest:
all her persecutors overtook her between the straits.”
The Haftorah readings during these weeks are taken from chapters in Isaiah and Jeremiah dealing with the Temple's destruction and the exile of the Jewish people.

This is a time of mourning for the Nation of Israel, in which joy and celebration is minimized. The sting of Divine judgement is acutely felt. Weddings and public celebrations are generally not scheduled, as pleasure and frivolous activity gives way to introspection and repentance.

Today Israel is quite literally in a narrow placebetween the straitssurrounded by hostile enemies who are relentlessly attacking and provoking necessary response in an effective two-pronged war—one of armaments, and the other a very successful media campaign against the only bastion of democracy and human rights in the Middle East.

She is also inexplicably pressed on all sides by many who should be her strongest alliesas they share religious and political foundations—yet a gross blindness seems to grip much of the western world, and most grievously, much of the church as well.*

Tisha B’Av (the 9th of the Hebrew month of Av) begins at sunset, Monday, August 4, 2014, and ends at sunset, Tuesday, August, 2014. The day of Tisha B’Av is commemorated in synagogues around the world by fasting, the reading of the book of Lamentations, and the recitation of prayers of mourning. The Torah cabinet is draped in black. Among many other catastrophic events, Tisha B'Av, commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem and the subsequent exile of the Jews from the Land of Israel.
Major Catastrophes That Occurred on Tisha B'Av:
  • The 10 Spies‘ evil report of the Promised Land was accepted by the congregation of Israel in the desert, bringing severe judgment forbidding them from entering the Land of Israel. (1312 BC)
  • The First Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians, led by Nebuchadnezzar. 100,000 Jews were slaughtered and millions more exiled. (586 BC)
  • The Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans, led by Titus. Some two million Jews were slaughtered. Another one million were exiled. (70 AD)
  • The Bar Kochba revolt was crushed by Roman Emperor Hadrian. More than 100,000 Jews were slaughtered. (135 AD)
  • Jerusalem was renamed Aelia Capitolina by Rome. The Temple area was plowed under, Jews no longer were allowed access, and Jerusalem became a pagan city as all traces of the God of Israel were erased.
  • Pope Urban II declared the First Crusade. Untold masses of Jews were murdered. (1096 AD)

  • The Jews were expelled from England. (1290 AD)
  • The Jews were expelled from France. (1306 AD)
  • The expulsion of Jews from Spain under the Spanish Inquisition was completed on Tisha B'Av in 1492.
  • WWI broke out on the eve of Tisha B'Av in 1914, setting the stage for the Holocaust.
  • The mass deportation of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto to extermination camps began on the eve of Tisha B'Av in 1942.
We encourage you to pray earnestly for the Jewish People during this time of mourning and historic tragedy.
And stand for Israel and the Jewish People.

A massive Rosh Hashanah terrorist attack and invasion using tunnels that reach deep into Southern Israel was thwarted by IDF Security Forces. Thousands of Hamas-linked terrorists planned to invade Israel and create a major catastrophic event on the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah, September 24), when military and security forces would be thin.

In Depth: The Price of Hamas’ Underground Terror Network
Hamas could be investing in the people of Gaza. Instead it invests in terrorism. Please understand, the "humanitarian crisis in Gaza" is a grand (and tragic) PR scheme.
FACT:
Gaza is one of the most heavily funded places in the world. Massive funds pour in from the Arab world, the European Union, [unbelievably] from Israel, and from the U.S.—even though they elected Hamas—the leading terrorist organization in the world, and America “does not fund terror!” Yet, the world rallies around Gaza’s lies/cries of impoverishment!

FACT: HUMANITARIAN AID BUILDS TERRORIST TUNNELS, BUYS WEAPONS, MISSILES Instead of utilizing these massive funds to build infrastructure and provide for her people, these funds have enabled Gaza to build an extremely sophisticated network of concrete tunnels (some 60 feet deep to avoid seismic detection, and large enough for vehicles!) used to kidnap, ambush, and murder Israelis, and to transport huge caches of weapons and thousands of missiles.

FACT: Over the past decade, a rocket from Gaza has hit Israel every 7 hours on average. What would America do if our neighbor to the south was shelling us relentlessly?

FACT: More than 450 rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza just this year. What would America do?

What about the CALL TO DIVEST? (BDS MOVEMENT) IS ISRAEL an APARTHEID STATE?
Watch this BRILLIANT and ARTICULATE

CONTINUAL UNPROVOKED MISSILE ATTACKS ON ISRAEL FOR A DECADE

FACT: Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, making it a 100% Jew-free zone* reminiscent of historic pogroms against Jews: the expulsion from Spain, Russia, the Holocaust...
FACT: Israel left beautiful homes, neighborhoods, and businesses that employed 5,000 Palestinians and a special Jewish financial grant intended to keep those Palestinians employed and businesses flourishing...
FACT: As the Israelis were deported, Palestinian mobs burned the homes and businesses to the ground...
FACT: Although they got what they demanded—a Jew-free Gaza—more than 8,000 rockets have been fired upon Israel—and they cry “occupation!” to the media as the reason.

*A westerner, and especially a Christian, should ask himself WHY they would be involved in this radical racism. Why would AMERICA be involved?! Establishing these "Jew-free" states for Arabs is identical to Hitler's "Judenrein" (Jew-free) dream for Europe and then the world! Israel gives full protection, freedom of religion, and human rights to the Arabs—why is it reasonable to discriminate against the Jews in Arab territories? And isn't this telling of their agenda? Christians are also persecuted and have all but disappeared—except a small segment that are useful, bowing to the Palestinian agenda of persecuting Israel.

FACT: ARABS USE HUMAN SHIELDS WHICH IS A WAR CRIME
ISRAEL WARNS CIVILIANS BEFORE ATTACKS AND HAS CANCELLED PROCEDURES DUE   TO THE PRESENCE OF CHILDREN/PEOPLE DETECTED AT A TARGET

The terrorist organization Hamas deliberately uses Palestinian civilians as human shields, and has a long history of doing so. Hamas hopes to achieve two goals by using human shields: to deter IDF attacks on legitimate military targets, and to exploit any incidental harm that is caused as a result of IDF military activity.

Hamas knows very well that the IDF does everything that it can to avoid civilian casualties. That is why in recent days Hamas issued messages on its television, radio, and social media platforms to ignore the IDF’s warnings of impending strikes and to remain in their homes.

“We call on our Palestinian people, particularly the residents of northwest Gaza, not to obey what is written in the pamphlets distributed by the Israeli occupation army,”

Hamas announced through official media channels on July 13. “We call on them to remain in their homes and disregard the demands to leave, however serious the threat may be.” The Hamas Interior Ministry has also called on the residents of northern Gaza to stay in their homes and ignore IDF flyers, distributing its message through official Hamas TV.

The IDF will continue to conduct its operations in full accordance with international law, including by attacking only legitimate military targets, and will continue its efforts to minimize harm to Palestinian civilians.

Where do you stand?

Wherever we stand,
We stand with Israel!

For this is the Heart of Adonai:
“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
‘May they prosper who love you.
May peace be within your walls,
And prosperity within your palaces.
For the sake of my brothers and my friends,
I will now say,
“May peace be within you.
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek your good.’”

As we enter the Yamim Noraimימים נוראים the 10 Days of Awe from Rosh Hashanah or the Feast of Trumpets to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, may we turn from any ways that trample underfoot the glory of the Name of the LORD or the testimony of His holiness. Let us rejoice in His gracious forgiveness!
Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity
And passes over the rebellious act of the remnant of His possession?
He does not retain His anger forever,
Because He delights in unchanging love.
He will again have compassion on us;
He will tread our iniquities under foot.
Yes, You will cast all their sins
Into the depths of the sea.
You will give truth to Jacob
And unchanging love to Abraham,
Which You swore to our forefathers
From the days of old.

The Creative Force of Love

It’s clear from the beginning, Adonai is a God of love.
He loves us far more than we love Him.

The testimony is resplendent. The immeasurable expanse of the universe, populated with innumerable magnificent heavenly bodies, and an infinitesimal measure of particles, discretely balanced to present a singular planet in a singular solar system, a singular habitation to sustain His beloved creation ... that we may come to know “the LORD your God, the great and awesome God, is among you. Indeed heaven and the highest heavens belong to the LORD your God, also the earth with all that is in it” (Deuteronomy 7:21, 10:14).

In the B’rit Chadashah (New Testament), we are instructed regarding love from Torah:
  • “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5, Matthew 22:37).
  • “...you shall love your neighbor as yourself...” (Leviticus 19:18, Matthew 22:39)

It’s an unfortunate misjudgment of the Almighty among some that the Old Testament is all about judgment, whereas the New Testament is all about grace.

The creative force of YHVH is LOVE. The LOVE of God bestowed forgiveness through His chesed חסד, grace, and taught man to LOVE and forgive. This radical ideal changed history, and set standards for ethics and morality that stand to this day. One of the great Hebrew sages taught: “The world rests upon three things: Torah, service to God, and bestowing chesed (grace and lovingkindness).” Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers

The Divine LOVE with which God manifested creation is a standard for humanity: LOVE your neighbor, LOVE the stranger, show forth His charity, His compassion, and His justice. Build a world that conforms to the blueprints of His LOVE!

For the LORD your God is God of gods
and LORD of lords,
the great God, mighty and awesome,
who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.
He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow,
and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing.
Therefore love the stranger,
for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve Him,
and to Him you shall hold fast, and take oaths in His name.
He is your praise, and He is your God,
who has done for you these great and awesome things
which your eyes have seen.”
—Deuteronomy 10:17-21

You say, “but wait, there’s an ‘if’!”
“Then it shall come to pass, because you listen to these judgments, and keep and do them, that the LORD your God will keep with you the covenant and the mercy which He swore to your fathers. And He will love you and bless you and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your land, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flock, in the land of which He swore to your fathers to give you. You shall be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be a male or female barren among you or among your livestock. And the LORD will take away from you all sickness, and will afflict you with none of the terrible diseases of Egypt which you have known, but will lay them on all those who hate you” (Deuteronomy 7:12-15).

Yes, Adonai constructed the universe with spiritual laws as immutable as the natural laws He created. Like gravity, they are purposeful and beneficial. When disregarded (such as jumping off a building), one must be aware of the consequences. The LORD has given His Word that His beloved creation may know how to live a pleasing life before Him and be blessed. This is what He desires for us.

His spiritual laws express His LOVE. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome” (I John 5:3).

The law of LOVE is just, ethical, and balanced with grace and mercy. The plumb line is extended from Heaven. Let us look upward to His higher way and be humbled and transformed by the prescient LOVE that first apprehended us. “We love Him because He first loved us” (I John 4:19).
The LOVE of God is faithful, transcendant, and triumphant, as our B'rit Chadashah portion proclaims: For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God” (Romans 8:39), which we receive through our Messiah Yeshua.

Our Haftarah portion, also reminds of the faithful LOVE of God. When Israel thought herself forsaken, Adonai answered, Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me" (Isaiah 49:15-16). In Isaiah 50:1 Adonai even challenges: “Where is the certificate of divorce?”  In spite of initiating the certificate of divorce against His adulterous bride, Israel (Jeremiah 3:8), His LOVE, mercy, and faithfulness will overcome His anger, and He will restore His bride for His Name's sake.

YHVH defined LOVE with the most astonishing revelation: In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him” (I John 4:9).

The GOSPEL in the Genealogy of GENESIS 5

Now here is a question for you to ponder. How did one become a member of God’s family prior to the death and resurrection of Yeshua? Post resurrection, now that is easy.  One, realizing they are lost in their sin and consequently on their way to an eternity separated from God, looks back to the work of Yeshua on Calvary’s tree. Seeing they are without any righteous merit of their own they put their faith in the Messiah’s once and for all work for them. They place their absolute belief in the fact that the death and resurrection of Israel’s redeemer, Jesus of Nazareth, paid the price for all their sins. His work of redemption and their faith in it makes them a member of God’s family. (Romans 10:9-11)

But for those seeking that family membership prior to the Messiah giving His life on the cross, what was the process for them? Some might say that all one had to do was keep the Law, but we know that wasn’t the case. Paul said, “Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20-21).
The Law was given to live by, to show what sin was, not to trust for one’s eternal destiny. So if not by keeping the Law, what then?

Well, others will say that family membership was accomplished by simply “believing” God. Here Abraham is pointed to. And Genesis 15:5-6 is that cornerstone text, “And He took him outside and said, ‘Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’ And He said to him, ‘So shall your descendants be.’ Then he believed in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness. But was this the first, the once and for all act that gave Abraham family membership? Hebrews 11:8 tells us of an act of faith by Abraham that predates the Genesis 15 story. So if he already was in the family, what got him there? Paul throws some light on yet another possibility.

In Acts 26:22-23 he says, “So, having obtained help from God, I stand to this day testifying both to small and great, stating nothing but what the Prophets and Moses said was going to take place; that the Christ was to suffer, and that by reason of His resurrection from the dead He would be the first to proclaim light both to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles."

Here two points are made by Paul. The first is that the prophets and Moses spoke of a future eventThe second is that the event of which they spoke was the future death of the Messiah and His resurrection from the dead. Sounds strangely like a forward view of the gospel message we speak today, a message whether looking forward to it or as in our case back on it, places sinners in the family of God by exercising faith in it.

The gospel message is indeed found in the Old Testament. Was belief in it what placed one into the family of God? Was this the way Abraham and indeed all other Old Testament saints were made children of Adonai? We’ll let you ponder that one.

What follows is one example of the gospel in the Old Testament. Genesis five, written by Moses, is not only a lineage but a presentation of the gospel as well. You’ve got to look for it, but it’s there. The Hebrew reader had to of had a clear understanding of what was being said as he would know what each of these names meant. All he had to do was put it together. So join us in the exercise and see what you think.

(We find the Genesis 5 genealogy also in Luke 3:36-38 in reverse. It ends with Adam, making the point that he alone was a son of God. From Adam on, all are sons of Adam, sons of man.)

Adam אדם
Adam means man, mankind. (Genesis 1:26) Interestingly both the first man and the first woman were “Adam.” (Genesis 1:27) Eve was not named until after the fall. (Genesis 3:20)

Seth שת
Adam's son was named Seth, which means appointed. Eve said of her son: “"For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed."” (Genesis 4:25).

Enosh אנוש
Seth's son was called Enosh, meaning mortal. From the root anash, it speaks of an incurable wound, grief, sickness, or wickedness.

Kenan קינן
Enosh's son was named Kenan, which is believed to mean sorrow. (It is believed that Kenan is synonymous with Cainan.)

Mahalalel מהללאל
Kenan's son was Mahalalel. Ma’halal means blessed or praise; and El in Hebrew is God. Thus, Mahalalel means the Blessed God. Biblical names often include El, the name of God, as Daniel,  which means, “God is my Judge.”

Jared (Ya’redירד
Mahalalel's son was named Ya’red. The Hebrew word, yaradh, means shall come down.

Enoch (Chanochחנוך
Jared's son was named EnochChanoch in Hebrew, which means teaching. “Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him” (Genesis 5:24). He did not see death, Hebrews 11:5 tells us, for he pleased God. Jude 1:14-15 also mentions Enoch prophesying the return of Yeshua: “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”

Methuselah מתושלח
Enoch was the father of Methuselah, who died the year of the great flood. His name means His death shall bring.

Lamech למך
Methuselah's son was named Lamech, meaning despairing. The root word forms our own English word, lament or lamentation.

Noah (Noach) נח
Lamech is the father of Noah. Noah means rest or comfort, for Lamech said when naming him, “This one will comfort us...” (Genesis 5:29) The Hebrew word for comfort is nacham  נחם, and not only means comfort or rest, but interestingly,  it also means repentance.

Putting it all together:
Man [is] appointed [to] mortal sorrow; [but] the Blessed God shall come

down teaching; His death shall bring the despairing rest, or comfort.

As you might imagine the production of the weekly Parashah is a rather labor intensive process. Consequently some much needed R and R accounts for a brief offering from time to time. Since we have grown to love our communication with you, we will still endeavor to have some "challah" to share around the Lord’s Shabbat table. Hopefully they will pique your interest and be spiritually enriching. It is our joy to study and write. Because of you it has been our blessing to minister in this very special way.

A Closer Look at a Familiar Christmas Verse

Probably one of the most well known Bible verses related to Christmas is Luke 2:14. The most familiar translation is taken from the King James version: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

To most, the accepted understanding has been that God’s Son came that we might have peace on the earth and spread good will amongst mankind. However, since we have not had much peace on this earth and the spreading of good will worldwide has always been in short supply we might look for another understanding.

In the original language of Scripture, Luke 2:14 reads, “Glory in highest (places) to God and on earth peace among men of goodwill.”  This exclamation carries no small amount of significance since it came from a multitude of angels who could hold their silence no longer. One angel had just announced the birth of the long-awaited Messiah to a group of shepherds. The rest—that multitude looking on, undoubtedly so excited over the birth of the Son of God, and what it was to mean for mankind—could not restrain their praise. Yet what did their words mean?

Luke 2;14 starts out this way: “Glory in highest (places) to God…”  Simply put, to glorify God means to prove true to others what God has said is true of  Himself.  That being said, the multitude of angels were stating a fact, excitedly I’m sure.  It was that in the highest places of heaven perhaps the greatest of God's promises had just been proven to be true!

Throughout the heavens all beings now knew that God had done what He said He would do, send His Son, the Second Person of the Godhead to take on the likeness of man, being born of the seed of a woman. Having proven true what He had said of Himself had brought glory in heaven to God.  And the angels in heaven could not be silent now seeing the reality of this miraculous event.

But this angelic host went on to say more, “…and on earth peace among men of goodwill.”  We most likely have understood and probably hoped that this angelic host was proclaiming that the birth of the Son of God would bring worldwide peace and goodwill to mankind. But sadly that has hardly been the case, as our history since that event bears out.  So if not that, then what was being said?

The host of angels have unanimously proclaimed that the objects of this peace are members of mankind who possess a unique quality, that of goodwill.  This begs the question, “Who are those people of goodwill and how did they come by it?”

Looking elsewhere in the Bible we can see that when an individual enters the human race there is nothing good in that basis model of human being.  Indeed we are all sinners from birth and in need of the Redeemer. The only good to be found in any of us is that which God produces through us.

So the answer to our question is that men of goodwill are those who have truly been brought into God’s family by accepting the work of redemption of the Son of God on the executioner's stake. And the peace that is to exist on earth is that which is given them for having made this decision, and then living in light of it.

Put another way, God’s peace is not universal. It is specific. While it is available to all who will accept God’s Son as Savior from sin, true peace will be manifested only in those who make this decision and then let God work through them.

This Christmas season we should revel at the immeasurable joy the heavenly host expressed as they saw God bring glory to Himself  by accomplishing what He had said would be true of Himself. A more timely thought however is this: “Are we demonstrating in our lives that unique peace that can only come by having made Yeshua (Jesus) our Messiah and Lord, and then continually manifesting that peace in our lives by allowing God to work through us?"

May the joy you experience this season be that which comes because the peace of God is really yours through the Prince of Peace.

Blessings in Yeshua,
Michael & Sarah
